Grass Seed For Shady Areas

Clover Lawn Seed

Clover lawns are primarily composed of clover plants, rather than grasses which helps them maintain their green shine all year round. This is possible due to their deep root system, which means you can enjoy a green lawn all through summer. Also, as they require less mowing and water than grass lawns due to their deep roots and that clover seeds can be left to bloom, attracting bees. Our range of Clover seeds are renowned for being low maintenance, needing little-to-no sprays or fertilisers, so you’ll save time and money on your perfect lawn this summer!

Our Clover Seed

For anyone seeking a distinctive alternative to traditional turf or grass, our JS11 Clover lawn seed presents a suitable option. A lawn composed of Clover offers a visually appealing aesthetic that is different from conventional grass seeds, introducing a unique charm to your garden landscape.

It is important to note, however, that clover-seeded lawns are generally not recommended for areas subjected to significant foot traffic due to their relatively lower tolerance to wear and tear compared to robust grass species. However, for people who experience allergic reactions to common grass, cultivating a clover lawn can provide a beautiful and hypoallergenic outdoor space. A Clover lawn can thereby enable you to enjoy your garden more comfortably and for extended periods.

Preparing and Maintaining your Clover Seed Lawn

Thanks to their deep root systems that access naturally occurring nitrates, clover-seeded lawns need minimal preparation and eliminate the need for fertilisers, fungicides, and pesticides. Furthermore, as a resilient legume, clover not only tolerates extended dry spells and resists disease but also naturally enriches the soil by returning nitrogen, benefiting both itself and neighbouring plants, thus requiring little to no maintenance.

While the deep roots of clover enable it to need less watering in the summer by reaching deeper water sources than other grasses, this characteristic doesn’t translate to increased durability. Unlike traditional grass, clover lawns are best suited for areas with light foot traffic because their stems are not as resilient and don’t bounce back well after being stepped on.

Clover Lawn FAQS

General Information about Clover Lawns:

Is a Clover Lawn easy to maintain?

If you fancy the idea of cutting down on lawn maintenance and turning your grass sward into an eco-friendly zone. A lawn of clover plant provides a distinctive, yet appealing appearance and can be an alternative to a traditional, thirsty and labour-intensive monoculture grass lawn. As well as needing less water, they don’t need much fertiliser if any at all.

Is clover a good alternative to grass?

Clover lawns are incredibly bee friendly as they promote a valuable environment for pollination. Also, clovers can be enjoyed by grazing animals, with the protein-containing edible leaves and round heads of flowers making a good meal for grazers. It’s soft to walk on but it means that clover seeded lawns are not best recommended for lawns which receive high footfall traffic, so not advised for a garden used for playing sport.

Are Clover lawns good for people with allergies?

For people with allergies to grass, the clover seed can create a beautiful hypoallergenic lawn, allowing you to spend more time in the garden. Pollen isn’t present in a clover grass unless the lawn is allowed to flower and bloom. This can be managed with regular mowing as you would traditionally grass lawns. A 100% clover lawn means that allergy sufferers can spend more time out in the garden without having to endure runny noses and itchy eyes.

Will a clover lawn attract a lot of bees?

Yes, when left to bloom Clover flowers attract bees. If you have concerns about bee stings, especially if you have young children or pets who spend a lot of time on the lawn, this is something to consider. However, maintaining a regularly mown clover lawn can reduce flowering.

How long does a clover lawn last?

A well-established clover lawn can last for many years, often longer than a traditional grass lawn, especially with minimal maintenance. Clover is a perennial, meaning it comes back year after year.
