UK Native Calcareous Soils – Calcareous soils are chalky, sandy or limestone based soils. These are rather dry and the wildflowers and grasses are selected for their capability to cope with this soil type. This mixture is slower to establish and will require a little maintenance to keep it at it’s best for years to come. With 22 wildflowers and 6 grass species this mix offers a variety of colours, height and layers to any area where planted. The flowers range from yellows through to blues and will flower May through to August the following year after they are established. However you can add some Corn Cockle, Corn Marigold and Corn Chamomile for some colour in the first year. When sowing your seeds it is best to spread on to bare soil, do not add any soil improvements as this is not necessary for wildflowers. The sowing rates will depend on what mixture you are planting, 100% wildflower is sown at 2g/m2 and the 80:20 mix is spread at 4g/m2. These mixes can be added to existing grass land as long as there is no perennial rye grass present as this will over power any flowers. All wildflower mixes benefit the environment and the wider ecosystem. The grasses and flowers in this mix are beneficial to a vast variety of wildlife. Specifically they will attract Gatekeeper and Meadow Brown butterflies, Red-tailed and Buff-tailed bumble bees and the lime spec pug moth. Just some of the species you can expect to see.
