What is Clover Lawn Seed?
Clover lawns are primarily composed of clover plants, rather than grasses. Clover lawns are often green lawn all year round due to their deep root system, therefore stays green all throughout summer with reduced watering. Also, as they require less mowing than grass lawns, clover seeds can be left to bloom, attracting bees and other pollinators. Clover seeds and turf’s are renowned for being low maintenance, needing little-to-no sprays or fertilisers.
Benefits of Clover Lawns
If you fancy the idea of cutting down on lawn maintenance and turning your grass sward into an eco-friendly zone. A lawn of clover plant provides a distinctive, yet appealing appearance and can be an alternative to a traditional, thirsty and labour-intensive monoculture grass lawn. As well as needing less water, they don’t need much fertiliser if any at all.
Clover lawns are incredibly bee friendly as they promote a valuable environment for pollination. Also, clovers can be enjoyed by grazing animals, with the protein-containing edible leaves and round heads of flowers making a good meal for grazers. It’s soft to walk on but it means that clover seeded lawns are not best recommended for lawns which receive high footfall traffic, so not advised for a sports field or playground.
For people with allergies to grass, the clover seed can create a beautiful hypoallergenic lawn, allowing you to spend more time in the garden. A clover lawn is especially beneficial to people that have allergies to grass pollen. As a legume, pollen isn’t present in a clover grass unless the lawn is allowed to flower and bloom. This can be managed with regular mowing as you would traditionally grass lawns. A 100% clover lawn means that allergy sufferers can spend more time out in the garden without having to endure runny noses and itchy eyes.
Preparing and Maintaining your Clover Seed Lawn
Clover seeded lawns require very little preparation as no fertilisers, fungicides or pesticides are needed. This is as result of their deep roots being able to feed off deep-seated nitrates. As a result, they are known for adding nitrogen back into the soil, enriching it and other plants. As a resilient legume plant, capable of withstanding long periods of drought and has a high disease resistance, no fertiliser or maintenance is needed.
Also, the deep roots mean the lawn requires less watering throughout the summer as they can reach deeper sources of water over other grass species. However, unlike traditional grass, this deep-rooted system doesn’t increase a clover lawn durability. Clover lawns are best suited to lawns that receive little footfall traffic. The clover stems aren’t resilient and do not bounce back as well as grass species.
