JS31 Tall Fescue – A mixture that takes advantage of the new strains of finer leafed tall fescues coming through the seed breeding programmes. These new deep-rooting tall fescues, with higher shoot density produce hard wearing alternatives to perennial ryegrass mixtures. Coupled with outstanding drought tolerance and excellent summer colour. Due to the very vigorous rooting depth reaching over 1m, this mixture can be utilised where serious drought is a problem.

The seeds we ordered were received quickly and we planted them in stages between about June and September. All the seeds came up with clearly the earlier ones doing better. We ordered this seed because we want a tough grass with deep roots that stands weather vagaries and the attention of our exercising greyhound. So far so good, but the real test will come in the spring when we see how the grass has survived the dog, wet weather and the cold. I imagine that we will be ordering more to finish the area we want.

We bought JS31 Tall Fescue because of its long roots, which I’d heard provides greater resistance against infestations of chafer grubs. We have had problems with our local wildlife digging up the lawn and so are keen to try anything, which gives the grass a better chance of becoming established. It’s hard to say how much difference it has made in terms of deterring the badgers from visiting however, I’d have to say that the lawn which has managed to evade their interest definitely looks good and appears very healthy (and no less coarse than other grass seed varieties that we’ve tried).
